About the author Irene Arvanitis

As a teacher, the story ‘Up in the Air They Fly’, is written based on my professional observations. After having taught senior primary students for the majority of my teaching career, I found it a challenge to find age appropriate picture story books, with a focus on celebrating differences. Therefore, I decided to write my own book, in order to help educate my students on a topic I feel very passionately about.

The main character Jesse, is based on many children I have come into contact with who are on the autism spectrum. I have taken these traits and used them to teach awareness and acceptance throughout the story. With this in mind,
the school community can support and nurture all students, no matter what their challenges are. Jesse is a child on the spectrum with low needs. Individuals who are on the autism spectrum with low needs, generally have average or above average intelligence, however struggle with issues related to social interaction and communication. I chose to portray Jesse as a child on the autism spectrum with low needs to highlight the fact that these traits can be subtle, yet very challenging at the same time. You will also notice throughout the story that the word ‘Autism’ is not once mentioned. This means that the book can be used as a resource for teaching autism spectrum awareness or the overarching issue of bullying, which is an area all children need educating in. I believe it is imperative that we teach the importance of embracing difference to make a difference. Coming from a very supportive and loving family, I was always taught this growing up and as a result I too would like to spread this message. In fact, the illustrator is my Father Nick Nicola.

Treating others the way you like to be treated is something we should always remember.

“Wonderful book to help children understand that we are all unique and different. I love the activities at the back of the book, a wonderful way to help students engage with the text and understand Autism Spectrum Disorder. Highly recommend for all middle and senior primary classrooms.”
